Melbourne

It turns out that money really does grow on trees.

The natural capital sector beckons as a new return driver for the world’s largest investors and a way for them to decarbonise their portfolios and effect change in the real economy. Join a host of natural capital experts for a lunch discussion of the alpha in agriculture, how to get returns from the mostly untapped carbon credit market, and the new investment opportunities generated by the advent of the circular economy

AGENDA

FORMAT | MELDA

Session #1

Agricultural alpha: Food technology, soil conservation and precision farming

Precision use of resources lends itself to not only higher crop yields but also better protects the land, soil, and nutrients as part of a more sustainable and environmentally protected planet. This session will capture the technological developments that make that possible.

Session #2

Funding forestry: Money does grow on trees

The stock of timber today reflects decisions made decades before. With demand for natural materials continuing to grow across the construction, fuel and paper industries we are seeing rising prices for timber products. But there are different types of risk in these investments compared to other assets. Storms, wildfires and droughts create plenty of challenges, as does illegal logging, regulatory change and sourcing the right insurance. This session will capture the risk management processes that support institutional investors in navigating this increasingly attractive asset class.

Session #3

Carbon footprints: Portfolio hedging, regulatory trends and a new asset class

Historically, institutional investors needed to think about hedging their investments against currency and interest rate risks. They now also need to reconcile the carbon component and hedge across their total portfolio accordingly. This case study will explore how to manage a complex risk for fiduciary capital.

FORMAT | PANEL

Session #4

Investor Response: Biodiversity, circular economy and responsible alpha

Reflecting on the conversations held throughout the forum and on the key learnings of the day, this panel will capture the investor response to natural capital opportunities, identifying how different asset owners are thinking about the asset class, their allocations within different portfolios and how to differentiate the opportunity set to source the best possible deals.
